Calgary’s young and talented performers, Katie McMillan and Jillian Hubler-McManus, are experiencing an extraordinary opportunity as they collaborate in shaping a brand-new production of Beaches – The Musical alongside legendary American songwriter Mike Stoller. The renowned Stoller, responsible for timeless hits such as ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘Stand By Me,’ is crafting the melodies for the show’s international premiere at Theatre Calgary.
McMillan, 24, and Hubler-McManus, 18, are thrilled to be part of this exceptional production, rubbing shoulders with industry veterans like Stoller and other Broadway stalwarts. The show’s cast and crew boast extensive Broadway experience, including Kelli Barrett and Jessica Vosk, who will take on the leading roles.
The young Calgarians are not only contributing to the show’s creation but also gaining invaluable insights and honing their skills under the guidance of these seasoned professionals. “It’s an amazing opportunity,” says McMillan. “Mike is a musical genius. It’s incredible to witness his creative process.”
Hubler-McManus echoes this sentiment: “I never imagined I’d get to work with someone like him. Mike has written some of my favorite songs.” Stoller has been equally impressed by the young performers’ talents, describing them as “marvelous actors and dancers.”
This collaboration between local talent and Broadway veterans is fostering an extraordinary exchange of knowledge and experience. The Calgarians are eager to learn from their experienced counterparts, while the latter appreciate the energy and enthusiasm of the younger performers.
As the production nears its opening night on May 18th at the Max Bell Theatre in Arts Commons, Stoller expresses his aspirations for the show: “I would love it to go to Broadway.” The Theatre Calgary production of Beaches – The Musical promises to be a remarkable showcase of musical storytelling and a testament to the transformative power of intergenerational collaboration.
