YouTube Experiments with Pause Ads to Boost Revenue

In an effort to expand its presence during video playback, YouTube is actively experimenting with various methods of displaying advertisements to non-Premium subscribers. This move is part of the company’s broader strategy to increase its revenue streams. During Alphabet’s Q1 2024 earnings call, Philipp Schindler, a Senior Vice President at Google, disclosed the results of an ad experiment conducted on YouTube. The experiment, which introduced a new ad format known as Pause Ads, has shown promising results. Pause Ads appear as unobtrusive banners around the video content when users pause their videos. They can be easily dismissed by clicking the “dismiss” button. Notably, Pause Ads share similarities with those tested by other video streaming platforms, such as Hulu. This news follows a recent announcement by YouTube regarding potential buffering issues and error messages for viewers utilizing third-party apps to access its content.
