Yukon’s next generation of wildland firefighters is emerging from the intense ‘Beat the Heat’ boot camp in Whitehorse. The 12-day program has put the physical and mental skills of 40 aspiring firefighters to the test. Led by Yukon First Nations Wildfire, the boot camp is designed to prepare participants for the challenges of fighting wildfires, a task made increasingly critical by climate change and the associated rise in wildfire frequency and intensity.
To earn a spot on a unit crew with Yukon First Nations Wildfire, students must pass a series of rigorous tests and examinations. These assessments cover a wide range of firefighting fundamentals, including incident command systems, radio operations, and safety suppression techniques. Candidates must also complete the WFX Fit test, which evaluates their physical fitness and ability to perform effectively in demanding wildfire conditions.
The curriculum also includes simulated on-field scenarios, providing students with hands-on experience in tackling realistic firefighting challenges.
