Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a strong call to Western military leaders, urging them to lift restrictions on the use of weapons against Russian territory. During a US-led forum of nations supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts, Zelenskyy asserted that limiting Ukraine’s ability to target Russian forces is counterproductive and hinders their ability to counter Russian aggression effectively. He argued that providing Ukraine with the necessary weapons and removing restrictions on their use is crucial for exerting military pressure on Moscow.
Zelenskyy highlighted the ongoing limitations on the use of long-range missiles and rockets supplied by Western nations, emphasizing that this policy remains unchanged. He explicitly expressed his desire for a more robust response to Russia’s actions, emphasizing the need for a more assertive approach in countering Russian aggression.
The Ukrainian president stressed the importance of long-range capabilities, not only to target Russian forces within Ukraine but also to strike targets inside Russia itself. He believes this is crucial for effectively deterring and pressuring Russia.
Zelenskyy also appealed to Kyiv’s supporters to follow through on their commitments, expressing concern about the significant number of air defense systems that have yet to be delivered.
The call for lifting restrictions comes as Russia’s forces continue to advance in the Donbas region, with Russian President Vladimir Putin declaring the capture of the eastern area as his primary objective in the conflict.
The meeting in Germany, attended by representatives from around 50 nations, focused on bolstering Ukraine’s air defenses and encouraging allies to boost their defense industries.
Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced a new $250 million military aid package for Ukraine. This package is designed to provide Ukraine with the necessary capabilities to meet its evolving needs, including ammunition for HIMARS precision rocket launchers, artillery rounds, anti-tank and anti-air weapons.
Zelenskyy has consistently advocated for the use of long-range weapons, but many allies have expressed concerns about escalating the conflict by striking targets deep inside Russia, fearing a direct confrontation between the West and Russia.
