Zendaya’s ‘Challengers’ Finds Success in the USA, Faces Challenges in India

Zendaya’s latest film, ‘Challengers,’ opened strongly in the USA with $15 million, but its performance in India was hindered by a limited release and cuts from the CBFC. Despite being one of Zendaya’s biggest box office releases, it earned just Rs 26 lakh in its opening weekend.

‘Challengers’ is a romantic sports film directed by Luca Guadagnino. It also stars Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor in the lead roles. In the USA, the film opened to $6.2 million but the collection has dropped with every passing day. On Saturday, the film collected $5 million and on Sunday, the numbers dropped to $3.78 million, taking the overall collection to $15.01 million.

Internationally, ‘Challengers’ has earned about $10 million, with the contribution from India being miniscule when compared to other countries. In India, the film earned Rs 4 lakh on Friday, Rs 10 lakh on Saturday, and Rs 12 lakhs on Sunday, taking the overall collection to just Rs 26 lakh.

The limited release and cuts from the CBFC are likely the reasons behind the film’s poor performance in India. The CBFC had ordered cuts for nudity and some swear words.

Despite the challenges in India, ‘Challengers’ has performed well internationally and is one of Zendaya’s biggest box office releases beyond franchises like ‘Spiderman’ and ‘Dune’.
