Pelicans forward Zion Williamson is hopeful his recent hamstring injury doesn’t keep him out as long as his last one did.
Speaking to reporters, Williamson shared his perspective on the injury he sustained in the final minutes of the Pelicans’ play-in game loss to the Lakers. The setback was “super demoralizing at first,” he admitted, given the team’s strong performance during the regular season. Having played a career-high 70 games, Williamson was eagerly anticipating his playoff debut, which is now on hold unless he recovers in time for the postseason.
Williamson hasn’t ruled out a return during the playoffs, saying it’s “absolutely realistic.” The team’s initial announcement indicated a two-week reevaluation period, potentially allowing him to return for Game 5 of the first-round series against the Thunder if necessary.
Comparing this injury to his right hamstring injury last January that ended his season, Williamson noted a difference in sensation. While the previous one was described as “a sharp pain,” the recent one felt more like “something was off.” He emphasized that passing certain tests will determine the timeline for his return.
Despite losing Game 1 of the first round, the Pelicans still have a chance to reach the playoffs. Williamson’s return, if possible, would significantly bolster their chances of advancing.
