A Zomato delivery agent has become an internet sensation for his unwavering commitment to duty during a flood-like situation in Gujarat. As Cyclone Asna battered the western state, leaving swathes of land inundated, the agent, clad in the recognizable red Zomato uniform, was photographed carefully navigating nearly waist-deep waters, his food order safely in hand.
The image quickly went viral, capturing the hearts of social media users who lauded the agent’s ‘extraordinary effort.’ Many tagged Zomato and CEO Deepinder Goyal, urging the company to bestow an immediate award on the dedicated employee.
Zomato responded by expressing their appreciation and seeking further details about the delivery to ensure the agent received the recognition they deserved. “They truly went above and beyond, braving extreme weather like a superhero,” a company spokesperson stated.
However, the incident also sparked a debate about the company’s role in ensuring the safety of its delivery partners during such hazardous conditions. Some critics questioned Zomato’s decision to allow deliveries amidst the floods, arguing that it put their employees at unnecessary risk.
“This is individual effort. Zomato should not take any credit considering its history of behavior with partners,” one user commented on X. Others voiced concerns about the safety of the delivery agent, emphasizing that he was risking his life for a relatively small order and might not have had to do so if he earned a living wage.
Meanwhile, the flood situation in Gujarat continues to be dire. Authorities are working tirelessly to provide relief and ensure the safety of residents. Heavy rainfall is expected to persist in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, while the Jamnagar region, which has endured days of torrential downpour, faces a critical situation due to overflowing dams and widespread waterlogging.
