ZooMontana Renews Autism Certification, Unveils New Sensory-Friendly Habitat

ZooMontana has renewed its dedication to creating an inclusive environment for autistic visitors and those with sensory sensitivities by reaffirming its Certified Autism CenterTM (CAC) status. This commitment was originally achieved in 2022 through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) and has been actively maintained since then.

“ZooMontana is honored to be a Certified Autism CenterTM because every individual deserves an inclusive and welcoming experience,” says Jeff Ewelt, executive director of ZooMontana. “Embracing autism certification isn’t just about meeting standards; it’s about ensuring that everyone, regardless of their unique needs, can enjoy and connect with the wonders of ZooMontana. It’s a commitment to empathy, understanding, and the belief that diversity enriches our community.”

Beyond reaffirming its commitment to inclusivity, ZooMontana has also unveiled a new habitat designed specifically with sensory sensitivities in mind. The Foster Waterfowl Refuge is a natural passageway for migratory waterfowl, boasting waterfalls, indigenous flora, and a submerged fish viewing zone. This serene environment provides a tranquil experience for guests who may find traditional zoo settings overwhelming.

Myron Pincomb, chairman of IBCCES, praised ZooMontana’s continued commitment to inclusivity. “ZooMontana’s commitment to maintaining its Certified Autism CenterTM status heightens its dedication to creating an inclusive environment for all visitors,” he said. “By continuing to meet and exceed our standards, the zoo demonstrates its support for the autism community and its efforts to provide a welcoming and enriching experience for everyone.”

IBCCES has been a leading force in training and certifying professionals in autism, neurodiversity, and cognitive disorders for over two decades. Their work extends across healthcare, educational, and corporate sectors globally. The organization has developed tailored programs specifically for the hospitality and recreation industries, including hotels, amusement parks, museums, and other venues. This ensures staff are adequately trained to provide accommodations for individuals with autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions.

As the sole credentialing organization offering these comprehensive programs, IBCCES provides training by experts and autistic advocates, ongoing support, and continuous educational opportunities. To further support families and individuals navigating travel with autism, IBCCES has also launched AutismTravel.com, a complimentary online platform that provides resources for parents seeking locations and professionals that meet the stringent requirements of the Certified Autism CenterTM designation.
