Zuckerberg Water Prize Returns to Israel, Awarding $60,000 for Outstanding Water Achievements

The Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev is set to award a prestigious $60,000 prize for exceptional contributions to the field of water. This global recognition, the Zuckerberg Water Prize, will be presented at the Second International Water Summit, scheduled for May 5-6, 2025, at Ben-Gurion University’s Sde Boker Campus in Israel.

The summit will bring together a distinguished group of water experts from around the world to address the pressing issue of global water scarcity. The event will explore the impact of climate change on water resources, water challenges in developing regions, and innovative water technologies.

Nominations for the Zuckerberg Water Prize are open until December 1, 2024, and individuals or organizations with remarkable water-related achievements are encouraged to apply. The award, funded by the generous contribution of Mr. Roy Zuckerberg, Honorary Chair of the Institute, recognizes individuals or organizations that have made a significant impact on water research, management, or conservation.

The Second International Water Summit itself will serve as a platform for sharing knowledge and expertise. Researchers interested in presenting their work at the event through posters are invited to submit abstracts by February 18, 2025.

This year’s summit builds upon the success of the inaugural Zuckerberg Water Prize in 2022, which was awarded to Professor Ashok Gadgil from the University of California, Berkeley, for his pioneering work in connecting water engineering with resource-poor regions.

Professor Noam Weisbrod, Dean of the Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research, emphasized the importance of the summit, highlighting the challenges posed by global water scarcity, particularly in a region like the Negev Desert.

Professor Amit Gross, outgoing Director of the Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research, expressed pride in presenting the prestigious Zuckerberg Water Prize for the second time, noting that the award fosters excellence and distinction within the field, ultimately serving humanity.

The Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research, situated on Ben-Gurion University’s Sde Boker Campus, is renowned for its groundbreaking water research. The Institute’s interdisciplinary team, comprised of hydrologists, soil scientists, geologists, chemists, microbiologists, and engineers, is dedicated to addressing environmental challenges and developing innovative water solutions.

With a youthful and dynamic international environment, the Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research is committed to being a leading international center for water research and training. Their vision is to provide expertise and solutions to both natural and anthropogenic water-related issues.
