Longtime philanthropists Patricia and David Morton have made a generous $500,000 donation to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) to support mental health and addictions care. The donation was announced during a private family event at the hospital, where signage was also unveiled in the couple’s honour at the hospital’s mental health and addictions crisis response unit.
PRHC Foundation president Lesley Heighway expressed gratitude for the Mortons’ support, stating that their gift will transform physical spaces and lives, allowing PRHC to elevate the standard of care and create inclusive environments for individuals seeking mental health and addictions crisis treatment.
The couple has been steadfast supporters of the hospital, both as donors and volunteers. Their decision to support the crisis response unit was prompted by the tragic loss of a family member due to suicide. Patricia Morton shared that their family has experienced firsthand the devastating impact of mental illness and recognized the need for better, safer, and more accessible mental health crisis spaces.
David Morton emphasized that their donation aims to turn tragedy into hope by providing a safe and supportive environment for individuals in crisis, preventing others from experiencing the devastation of losing a loved one to mental illness. Their hope is that this contribution will inspire others to join in the effort to support the future of mental health care in the community.
PRHC’s director of mental health and additions, Jennifer Cox, highlighted the increasing demand for services at the unit, with patient visits doubling over the past decade. The Mortons’ gift will enable the unit to expand by 50%, providing natural light, a dedicated waiting area for children and adolescents, and a secure short-stay area for high-risk patients requiring reduced stimulation and enhanced nursing care.
PRHC president and CEO Lynn Mikula emphasized the transformative impact of the improvements, creating a healing environment that fosters hope, dignity, and comfort, empowering patients on their journey towards recovery with confidence and strength.
