The Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) has expressed concerns about the Agniveer recruitment scheme for the Armed Forces and the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), issues that have drawn criticism from various political parties and stakeholders.
JD(U) spokesperson KC Tyagi called for modifications to the Agniveer scheme, acknowledging its unpopularity among certain sections of voters and its possible impact on the recent Lok Sabha election results. He emphasized the need to address the shortcomings raised by the public.
Regarding the UCC, which seeks to establish a common civil code for all citizens regardless of religion, the JD(U) maintained that discussions with all stakeholders are crucial before implementation. The party’s support is essential for the stability of the NDA government.
The Agniveer scheme, introduced in 2022, has faced criticism from the defense community. Under this scheme, youth are recruited for four years, with only 25% being retained after that period.
Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav has also called for the scrapping of the Agniveer scheme, while former army chief General VK Singh has proposed modifications after the initial batch of recruits completes four years of service.
The JD(U)’s stance on these issues reflects the complex political landscape surrounding military recruitment and the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code in India.
