India Braces for Heavy Rains: Red Alert in Goa, Orange Alerts Across the Country

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Goa, signaling the potential for extremely heavy rainfall throughout the day. In response to the severe weather warning, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has declared a holiday for all schools, from pre-primary to Class 12.

Beyond Goa, an orange alert has been issued for several states, including West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, anticipating heavy showers on July 8.

The IMD forecasts thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and intense to very intense precipitation on July 8/9 in the hilly and plain regions of Uttarakhand. The weather bulletin predicts heavy rains in the Tehri, Pauri, Bageshwar, Almora, Nainital, and Champawat districts of Uttarakhand on July 10.

Across Northwest and Central India, the IMD expects widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, until July 12. States experiencing these conditions include Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir.

Further east, Bihar and Odisha are predicted to experience heavy rainfall on July 8, while Arunachal Pradesh is expected to see similar conditions on July 11. Assam and Meghalaya are forecasted to experience heavy showers on July 10 and 11. Heavy rainfall is also expected in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until July 11.

The weather bulletin dated July 7 details isolated heavy rainfall likely over Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra between July 9-11; Gujarat Region on July 9; Kerala and Mahe on July 8; Telangana on July 8/9; Coastal Karnataka on July 9; North Interior Karnataka until July 10; and South Interior Karnataka between July 8/10. Isolated very heavy rainfall is also expected over Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on July 8; Konkan and Goa on July 8; and Coastal Karnataka during July 8/10/11.
