Mumbai is currently facing heavy rainfall, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert. The downpours are expected to impact Palghar, Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri, Mumbai districts, and ghat areas of Pune and Satara. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared that the weather and rainfall in Mumbai are currently normal, allowing life in the city to proceed smoothly. However, in anticipation of the predicted heavy rainfall, all schools and colleges within the BMC area will remain closed on Friday, July 26th. The BMC urged parents to rely solely on official information from the civic body and disregard any other information or rumors regarding school and college holidays.
The heavy rains have significantly disrupted train operations, leading to cancellations of several services. Central Railways cancelled train numbers 12124, 12126, and 12127 due to waterlogging. Additionally, trains 12123, 12124, 12125, 12126, 12128, and 12127 have also been cancelled. Passengers are advised to take note of these cancellations and plan their travel accordingly. Central Railways spokesperson Swapnil Dhanraj Nila highlighted that loco pilots are forced to reduce train speeds due to obstructed visibility during the rain, contributing to delays in service.
Air travel has also been affected by the heavy rainfall. IndiGo Airlines, in a post on X, acknowledged the weather-related delays and urged passengers to allow sufficient travel time to the airport. Air India offered full refunds or one-time complimentary rescheduling for confirmed bookings due to the impact of heavy rains on flight operations. Akasa Air also advised passengers to arrive at the airport well in advance, as waterlogging may cause traffic congestion. SpiceJet announced that all departures and arrivals from Mumbai, along with their consequential flights, may be affected by the bad weather.
In addition to Mumbai, the Thane Municipal Corporation has also announced the closure of schools and colleges for July 26th. Schools in Pune will also be shut down due to the heavy rainfall. The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the city and suburbs, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Gusty winds reaching 60-70 kmph are also anticipated. The Mumbai Traffic Police reported slow traffic movement at Centaur Bridge, Cibala Southbound, and Shindewadi.
The municipal corporations of Kalyan Dombivli (KDMC) and Greater Mumbai (MCGA) have urged residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary due to the red alert in place.
