Malayalam Actor Siddique Granted Interim Protection from Arrest in Rape Case

In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India has granted Malayalam actor Siddique interim protection from arrest in a rape case filed against him. This decision follows the release of the Justice Hema Commission report, which shed light on the widespread ill-treatment and sexual harassment faced by actresses in the Malayalam film industry.

The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma, heard the case and granted Siddique protection from arrest subject to certain conditions to be imposed by the trial court. He must also cooperate fully with the investigation.

This decision comes after Siddique’s earlier application for pre-arrest bail was rejected by the Kerala High Court on September 24th. The Supreme Court’s intervention in this case has generated significant public interest and highlights the ongoing struggle against sexual harassment in the Indian entertainment industry.

The Justice Hema Commission’s report has sparked important conversations about the need for systemic change within the Malayalam film industry to ensure the safety and well-being of all its members, particularly women.
