Delhi Implements Emergency Measures to Address Crippling Water Crisis Amid Heatwave
The Delhi government has implemented emergency measures to tackle the alarming water shortage afflicting the national capital during a record-breaking heatwave. In response to the water scarcity, the government has instructed the Delhi Jal Board to take strict action against water wastage and impose a fine of INR 2,000 on offenders.
Ban on Portable Water Usage at Construction Sites
To conserve water, the Delhi government has banned the usage of portable water at construction sites. The announcement was made by a Delhi minister, who stated that many car repair and car washing centers were utilizing Delhi Jal Board’s drinking water. These establishments have been prohibited from using Delhi Jal Board’s water for such purposes.
Enforcement Teams Deployed
The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has deployed teams to conduct inspections of car washing and repairing facilities, beginning from the following day. The government has appealed to Delhi residents to recognize the severity of the situation and conserve water during the emergency brought on by the heatwave.
Central Water Tanker War Room and Enforcement Teams
To ensure effective distribution and prevent wastage, the Delhi government has established a central water tanker war room. Additionally, 200 enforcement teams have been deployed to monitor water usage and identify violators.
Rationing of Water Supply
If the water crisis persists, the government may be forced to ration the water supply to manage the scarcity. This step will be taken to ensure equitable distribution and prevent further depletion of water resources.
Inter-State Water Dispute
Meanwhile, the Delhi government has accused the Haryana government of withholding Delhi’s water share despite repeated negotiations. The Delhi government has threatened to approach the Supreme Court to resolve this dispute.
Call for Water Conservation
The Delhi government has urged residents to take measures to conserve water and prevent wastage. Simple steps such as avoiding excessive car washing, fixing leaking taps, and reusing water for non-potable purposes can significantly contribute to addressing the water shortage.
