Delhi’s Water Crisis: Residents Grapple with Shortages Amidst Soaring Temperatures

Amidst soaring temperatures and a shortage in water supply, Delhi residents have been grappling with an acute water shortage in recent days. News agency ANI shared a video from Chilla Gaon in Mayur Vihar Phase 1, showcasing residents lined up alongside a water tanker, anxiously awaiting their turn to fill their empty vessels. Many areas within Delhi-NCR are suffering from the water crisis, significantly disrupting day-to-day activities. Compelled by the situation, numerous individuals have resorted to fetching water in plastic containers or canisters to fulfill their daily requirements.

The water shortage has ignited political disputes between authorities. On May 31st, the AAP government petitioned the Supreme Court, requesting a directive to the Haryana government to release surplus water supplied by Himachal Pradesh to the national capital. The Delhi government’s appeal urged for immediate attention to the worsening water crisis, exacerbated by the intense heatwave conditions.

In response, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini refuted the Delhi government’s allegations that his state was not adequately supplying the city’s share of water. On Sunday, he asserted that his administration provides water to the national capital beyond the agreed-upon quantity. Furthermore, Nayab Singh Saini urged the Delhi government to focus on proper resource distribution and management. When questioned about the AAP government’s accusations, Nayab Singh Saini stated, “Kejriwal is misleading people. Earlier too, he raised this issue. They want to hide their own shortcomings,” as reported by Mint.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the AAP’s plea on June 3rd, demanding immediate additional water from neighboring Haryana. On May 30th, the Delhi government announced the establishment of a central control room to monitor water supply across the national capital amidst the ongoing crisis. Additionally, Delhi residents can call on ‘1916’ to request water tankers, as announced by Delhi Water Minister Atishi.
