Edmonton Police Officer-Involved Shooting Under ASIRT Investigation
Edmonton police have requested an investigation by the independent police watchdog, ASIRT, after an officer shot a man in the city’s McCauley neighborhood.
The incident unfolded on Sunday morning when officers responded to a call of an assault at a home near 109th Avenue and 93rd Street. Upon arriving at the scene, police encountered a 33-year-old man who had allegedly assaulted another individual. According to a news release, the suspect emerged from the residence carrying a weapon, prompting a confrontation with the officers. During the encounter, the officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect.
The suspect sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital, where he is now listed in stable condition. A nearby home was also struck by gunfire, but no injuries were reported inside. No other civilians or EPS officers were injured during the incident.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been tasked with investigating the officer-involved shooting, as per protocol for incidents involving serious injury or death caused by police in Alberta. ASIRT is also responsible for investigating allegations of serious or sensitive police misconduct.
Witness Cathy Cummings, who lives in the McCauley neighborhood, reported hearing an argument followed by multiple gunshots while sitting in her living room. Her security camera captured the sound of the gunfire. Cummings expressed her fear and concern about the incident, stating that gunshots are a recurring issue in the area and that the proximity of the shooting felt particularly alarming.
The investigation into the officer-involved shooting is ongoing, and ASIRT will release its findings in due course.
