Former First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln’s Cabaret Dreams Take Center Stage on Broadway

In a captivating twist of historical storytelling, Mary Todd Lincoln’s unfulfilled cabaret aspirations are taking center stage on Broadway in the play ‘Oh, Mary!’. Written and performed by playwright Cole Escola, the play delves into the inner turmoil and secret desires of the former first lady, shedding light on her forgotten life beyond her role as President Abraham Lincoln’s wife.

With rave reviews from critics, ‘Oh, Mary!’ has already enjoyed a sold-out, twice-extended run at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in downtown Manhattan. Now, the production is poised to captivate Broadway audiences at the Lyceum Theatre, with previews beginning on June 26 and opening night scheduled for July 11. The limited 12-week engagement will conclude on September 15.

Set in the weeks leading up to President Lincoln’s assassination, ‘Oh, Mary!’ humorously explores the suffocating domestic life and unrequited yearnings of Mary Todd Lincoln. The play delves into themes of alcoholism, suppressed desires, and the search for identity, offering a nuanced and unconventional perspective on a historical figure often overshadowed by her husband’s legacy.

Directed by Sam Pinkleton, the play features a talented cast alongside Escola, including Conrad Ricamora as Mary’s husband, James Scully as her teacher, Bianca Leigh as her chaperone, and Tony Macht as her husband’s assistant. The creative team boasts an array of award-winning artists, including scenic designer dots, costume designer Holly Pierson, lighting designer Cha See, sound designer and original music composer Daniel Kluger, sound designer Drew Levy, wig designer Leah J. Loukas, props supervision Addison Heeren, and musical arranger David Dabbon.

With its unconventional blend of comedy and historical exploration, ‘Oh, Mary!’ is poised to become a must-see theatrical experience this summer on Broadway. The play promises to shed new light on Mary Todd Lincoln, revealing her hopes, dreams, and struggles as a woman living in the shadow of one of America’s most iconic presidents.
