Google Maps and Waze Get Major Navigation Enhancements

Google Maps is rolling out several new features designed to significantly enhance navigation experiences for users. These updates follow a major redesign unveiled during Google I/O 2024, which introduced a cleaner home screen, new pin colors, and a simplified interface.

For Google Maps users, there are two key improvements:

*

Enhanced Building Entry and Parking Guidance:

As you approach your destination, Google Maps will highlight the building in red and use a green indicator to point towards the main entrance. This ensures you won’t miss the entrance. Additionally, the app will now display nearby parking spots to help you find convenient parking.
*

Improved Incident Reporting:

Users can report incidents like road closures, construction, speed cameras, and police presence. This feature is similar to what’s already available on Waze and is accessible across various platforms, including Google Maps, Android, iOS, Android Auto, Apple Carplay, and cars with Google built-in. Larger icons make reporting easier, and other drivers can confirm reports with a simple tap.

Waze, also owned by Google, is getting its own set of upgrades:

*

Expanded Incident Reporting:

While Waze users have always been able to report incidents and get camera alerts, they can now report new types of traffic cameras. These include cameras enforcing bus or high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes and those monitoring seatbelt use and texting while driving. This provides drivers with warnings not just for speed cameras, but also for other potential fines or traffic disruptions.
*

Dedicated Event Information:

Waze is introducing a new feature that provides dedicated information about events in your area. This includes road closures related to events like marathons, sporting events, political rallies, or concerts. Users will receive push notifications for the first road closure near their work address, home address, or frequently visited locations like grocery stores or doctors’ offices. The feature is currently being rolled out for the 2024 Olympic Games and will be available for future events.
*

Navigation with Locked Phone:

Waze will allow users to access navigation guidance even when their phone is locked. This prevents drivers from having to unlock their devices while driving, promoting safer driving habits. This feature will be available globally on Android soon, with iOS users receiving it in the fall.
