India and Brunei Strengthen Ties: PM Modi Emphasizes Cultural Links and Economic Collaboration

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Brunei Darussalam on Wednesday underscored the deep-rooted and longstanding relationship between India and the Southeast Asian nation. During a meeting with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, PM Modi highlighted the “centuries-old ties” that bind the two countries and emphasized the significance of Brunei for India’s ‘Act East’ Policy, which aims to strengthen ties with countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

The meeting between the two leaders focused on strengthening bilateral relations across various dimensions. PM Modi expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and hospitality extended by the Sultan and the Royal Family, conveying his greetings to the people of Brunei on their 40th anniversary of Independence. He also spoke about the shared cultural heritage that forms the foundation of India-Brunei friendship.

PM Modi’s visit coincides with the 40th anniversary of India-Brunei diplomatic relations, marking a significant milestone in the two countries’ partnership. He highlighted the importance of expanding trade ties, fostering commercial linkages, and promoting people-to-people exchanges to further strengthen the relationship.

The Prime Minister’s visit included a warm welcome at the Istana Nurul Iman, the world’s largest palace, and an inauguration of the new Chancery of the High Commission of India in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei’s capital. The Chancery complex reflects India’s rich cultural heritage, seamlessly blending traditional motifs with modern design elements.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized Brunei’s critical role in India’s ‘Act East’ Policy and its vision for the Indo-Pacific region, further highlighting the significance of the visit. The visit underscores India’s commitment to deepening ties with Southeast Asian nations and furthering its strategic interests in the region.
