A heartbreaking discovery was made in Fresno County, California, where a playful litter of three-week-old kittens was found tied up in a plastic bag on Saturday. The five tiny felines, each weighing less than a pound, were left to die in an onion field in Huron. Thankfully, Bianca Ibarra heard their cries and came to their aid. She then turned to Facebook for assistance. Alexis Oxford, an Animal Care lead at Valley Oak SPCA in Visalia, responded to the post and jumped at the opportunity to provide care for the vulnerable kittens. “They were in pretty rough shape for the first 30 hours or so, it was kinda touch and go. I had to force feed them for a little bit because they are so used to their mother that they wanted to latch on to a bottle,” described Alexis. Oxford, who was raised around rescues, emphasized the constant care the kittens required. Around-the-clock bottle feeding has been crucial in ensuring their growth and well-being. They are expected to be ready for adoption in five weeks. Tessa Johnson, Valley Oak Adoption Lead, sadly noted that finding abandoned animals is not uncommon. “We currently have five parvo puppies that were found in a field somewhere. We try to take them on, but we can only operate based on donations,” mentioned Tessa. While the no-kill shelter often reaches max capacity, staff emphasizes the support of other shelters and locals willing to assist. Abandoning pets is never the answer. “Euthanasia rates aren’t great with Animal Control. There may not be a chance for that animal to make it out of the animal care facility, but it’s better than starving to death on the side of the road or being thrown in a field in a trash bag,” expressed Alexis. Dumping animals remains a crime, and there are numerous shelters across Tulare Kings and Fresno County that provide assistance to animals in need. Most of these shelters rely on donations, so contributing money or time can make a significant difference in giving puppies, kittens, dogs, and cats a chance at a happy life. Valley Oak SPCA is hosting an upcoming Wine and Wags Gala and auction fundraiser on July 13th at the Wyndham in Visalia from 6 pm to 10 pm. For more details, click here.
