Manitoba Funds Mental Health Support for First Responders Amidst Post-traumatic Stress Concerns

The death of Winnipeg firefighter Preston Heinbigner has highlighted the pressing need for enhanced mental health support for first responders. New Democrat MLA and former firefighter David Pankratz emphasized the impact of the trauma encountered on the job and the importance of reducing the stigma associated with post-traumatic stress.

The Manitoba government has responded by committing to fund three counsellors dedicated to supporting first responders. This initiative aims to address the barriers individuals face in seeking mental health assistance.

Heinbigner’s family and over 100 first responders attended the legislature to meet with Premier Wab Kinew, underscoring the urgent need for action. Former Winnipeg firefighter Pankratz shared his personal experience, acknowledging the significant toll that being a firefighter and paramedic can have on mental well-being.
