Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell (D) has taken to Facebook to deny a burglary charge against her following her arrest on Monday in Detroit Lakes. The charges stem from an incident at a residence where Mitchell was reportedly checking on a relative with Alzheimer’s.
In a lengthy Facebook post, Mitchell explained that she had received concerning medical information over the weekend and went to check on her family member at their home. She claimed that she had been a frequent visitor to the house for over 20 years and that her son had even lived there at one point.
Unfortunately, Mitchell’s unexpected visit startled the relative, who accused her of stealing. Mitchell vehemently denies the accusation, claiming that she was only trying to retrieve some of her late father’s belongings.
According to a complaint filed on Tuesday, Mitchell was arrested after police responded to a break-in call at the residence. She was found in the basement wearing black clothes and a hat. Mitchell allegedly told officers that she had been trying to communicate with the victim, her stepmother, without success.
Despite being charged with first-degree burglary, Mitchell maintains her innocence and hopes that the matter can remain private. She has received support from friends and colleagues on both sides of the aisle, who have expressed trust in her character and understanding of the challenges her family is facing due to Alzheimer’s.
