Miss Grand International Crown Controversy: Myanmar Delegate Returns Title, MGI President Responds

The Miss Grand International pageant, known for its glamour and global reach, has found itself in the midst of a dramatic controversy. The recent pageant, held in Thailand, saw India’s Rachel Gupta become the first Indian to win the coveted title, with Christine Juliane Opiaza of the Philippines and Thae Su Nyein of Myanmar securing the second and third runner-up positions, respectively. However, the drama unfolded when Myanmar’s National Director, Htoo Ant Lwin, made a controversial move on stage.

After Thae Su Nyein was declared second runner-up, Htoo Ant Lwin dramatically removed the crown and sash from her. This unexpected action sparked outrage and confusion among viewers and contestants alike. The incident was captured on video and quickly went viral on social media, leading to intense scrutiny and criticism of Htoo Ant Lwin’s actions. In response to the controversy, Miss Grand International severed ties with Htoo Ant Lwin, imposing a lifetime ban citing “lack of sportsmanship and business credibility.”

In a heartfelt and emotional Facebook Live post, Thae Su Nyein, the 18-year-old Myanmar delegate, explained her decision to return her second runner-up crown. She stated, “I’m not controlled by anyone, I just take my own decision. I give back my second runner-up crown just because we don’t get what we deserve: Our National Costume prize, our Country Power of the Year—not the winner crown.” She emphasized her respect for the other contestants, stating, “I love India, I love the Philippines, they’re my best sisters of all time. I don’t blame them.”

Thae Su Nyein also addressed the incident where Htoo Ant Lwin removed her crown, providing a different perspective than what was circulating on social media. “He just took care of me and another trainer, my national director’s friend, he just grabbed me because I couldn’t walk anymore,” she explained, adding that she cried not because of the crown, but “because, not only for me but for people in my country, they all hoped for this crown and they all fought together.”

The controversy has sparked widespread discussion about the pressures and expectations faced by contestants in beauty pageants. Many have expressed support for Thae Su Nyein’s decision and praised her courage for speaking out.

In response to Thae Su Nyein’s decision, Miss Grand International President Nawat Itsaragrisil, in a press conference in Bangkok, addressed the situation with a scathing remark, saying, “What makes her so delusional? If she wants first place and must have it, I suggest she create her own pageant so she can win every title.” His comments have further fueled the controversy and sparked debate about whether his response was appropriate and respectful.

The Miss Grand International organization now faces the challenge of rebuilding trust and addressing the concerns raised by this incident. It remains to be seen how this controversy will ultimately impact the future of the pageant and its reputation.
