Mumbai Batters Heavy Rains: Red Alert, Flooding, and Travel Disruptions

Mumbai and its surrounding areas were pounded by heavy rainfall for the second consecutive day on Sunday, leading to a red alert declaration by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD issued a red alert, signifying the potential for extremely heavy rainfall, for Thane and Palghar districts in Maharashtra, effective until 10 pm on Sunday. An orange alert, indicating a high risk of heavy rain, was also issued for Raigad district.

The torrential downpour brought widespread disruption to the city’s daily life. The heavy rains caused flooding in various low-lying areas, creating travel challenges for residents and commuters. The IMD has also issued yellow alerts for several other districts in Maharashtra, indicating a possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds.

The yellow alert extends to Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad, and other areas for Sunday and Monday. This alert is also in place for Palghar, Mumbai, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nasik, Bhandara, Nagpur, Wardha, Yavatmal until October 21; in Thane, Raigad, Ahilyanagar, Pune, Satara, Sangli, Sholapur, Akola, Amaravati, Buldhana, and Washim until October 22; and in Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Kolhapur until October 23.

Independent weather enthusiast Rushikesh Agre, who provides frequent rain updates on the ‘Mumbai Rains’ X handle, reported the arrival of huge thunderstorms from the interior of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), predicting intense rainfall in areas like Thane, Mulund, Kulra, Chembur, Ghatkopar, BKC, Bandra, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Malad, Kandivali, Goregaon, Borivali, and Powai. He advised residents to stay safe during the intense weather conditions.

As the city navigates this spell of heavy rainfall, it is crucial for residents to exercise caution, stay informed about weather updates, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. The IMD’s forecasts and local weather updates should be closely followed for the latest information and any potential changes in weather conditions.
