The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra on July 25th, prompting Mumbai to brace for intense downpours. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Mumbai has issued a yellow alert for the city, while an orange alert has been issued for Thane, Palghar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Raigad, and Ratnagiri. The IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra’s Ghat region. North Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada are expected to experience heavy rain at isolated places, while Vidarbha is likely to see thundershowers, gusty winds, and heavy rain in isolated areas. Adding to the concerns, Tansa Lake, a significant water source for Mumbai, has started overflowing at around 4:16 PM on July 25th. The BMC has confirmed the overflow, and three gates of the Tansa Dam have been opened, releasing water at a rate of 3,315 cusecs. The full storage capacity of Tansa Lake is 14,508 crore liters. With the heavy rainfall and overflow of Tansa Lake, authorities are on high alert to manage the situation and ensure public safety.
