PCORI Announces Funding Awards to Advance Patient-Centered Clinical Research and Implementation

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) recently announced the approval of funding awards totaling over $90 million to support new patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) studies. These studies aim to explore the effectiveness of different approaches to treating heart failure, asthma, hypertension, and migraines. Additionally, research will focus on the value of financial hardship screenings in advanced cancer care, shared decision-making in labor, post-traumatic stress disorder screening in obstetrics, and strategies for addressing intimate partner violence. Several studies will also provide data and strategies to optimize care delivery for historically underserved populations, promoting greater equity and improved outcomes. Recognizing that evidence generation is not the end goal, PCORI also supports efforts to implement PCORI-funded CER findings into clinical practice. One award funds a project to implement a telepsychiatry model of care for primary care patients with complex psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, PCORI has approved over $10 million for studies to improve CER methodology and strengthen the evidence base for engaging patients and healthcare decision-makers in the design and conduct of patient-centered CER. Details of all funded studies and projects can be found on the PCORI website, pending final contractual considerations.
