Jesus Zamudio, a longtime baker at Bob’s Donuts in San Francisco, remains hospitalized in critical condition following a hit-and-run incident on his way to work early Sunday morning.
According to the San Francisco Police Department, Zamudio was riding his electric scooter in the Mission District around 2:55 a.m. when a car struck him. When officers arrived at the scene, the driver had already fled.
Zamudio has worked at all three Bob’s Donuts locations in San Francisco, including the famous 24-hour shop on Polk Street. The owner of Bob’s Donuts said Zamudio was on his way to work at their location at the corner of Baker and Fulton Streets when the accident occurred.
Police say Zamudio’s injuries are life-threatening. His wife and two children in Mexico depend on him for financial support. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover his medical expenses. As of Wednesday morning, it had raised more than $21,000.
Anyone with information about the hit-and-run is asked to contact the SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text “tip” to TIP411 and begin the message with “SFPD.”
The hit-and-run incident has raised concerns about pedestrian and scooter rider safety in San Francisco. Shannon Cheng, a customer at Bob’s Donuts, said the incident made her think about the dangers of being on foot or on a small vehicle in the city.
“It’s just a dangerous city to be on your feet or on a small vehicle,” Cheng said. “I hope the police are able to find the driver who hit Jesus and hold them accountable for their actions.”
The San Francisco Police Department is actively investigating the hit-and-run and is asking for the public’s help in locating the driver. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police immediately.
