Threat Letters Targeting Sikh BJP Leaders in Punjab

Three prominent Sikh leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Punjab, Parminder Singh Brar, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, and Tajinder Singh Sran, have allegedly received threatening letters delivered to the party’s office in Chandigarh. The letters, which appear to be from the same source, were addressed to all three leaders.

While only the letter addressed to Sran was opened, it contained a packet of powder that he suspects could be dangerous. This letter, sent through registered post and received on July 1st, was written in Punjabi and called the three leaders “traitors.” Brar, a general secretary in the Punjab BJP, and Sran were accused of “interfering” in the Sikh religion and “misleading” people at the behest of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP. The letter also mentioned that Sirsa, a BJP national secretary, was speaking the “language” of the RSS and would be taught a “lesson.”

The letter went on to threaten revenge for the killings of “several brothers in Canada and Pakistan.” It specifically named pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, killed in Canada last year, pro-Khalistan activist Avtar Singh, who was involved in the attack on the Indian High Commission in London and died last year, and terrorist Paramjit Singh Panjwar, who was killed in Pakistan last year. The letter also referred to the Khalistan Zindabad Force terror outfit.

Sran has lodged a complaint with the Chandigarh Police and handed over all three letters for further investigation. The police are currently examining the matter.
