New York City-based TikTok star Eva Evans, whose real name was Eva Baumgardner, was found dead in her Brooklyn apartment on Saturday in an apparent suicide. She was 29 years old.
According to law enforcement sources, Evans had been depressed for several days leading up to her death. A friend who discovered her body told police that she had been found hanging by a scarf, with several cans of White Claw, a vial of white powder, and an apparent suicide note scattered nearby.
The friend had apparently stopped by the home after not hearing from Evans for a day. The sources added that the friend allegedly told cops she never thought Evans would commit suicide.
Evans’ mother allegedly later told investigators that her daughter had previous bouts of depression and was going through significant relationship problems at the time of her death.
Evans commanded a large following on social media, where she made videos about fashion and the experience of being a 20-something woman living in New York City. She also worked as an actress, starring in the Prime Video series “Club Rat.”
News of her death was met with outpourings of condolences, including from actress Julia Fox who called Evans a “New York icon.”
“I always saw her like a little sister and I knew she looked up to me,” Fox said. “She passed away. She was so young. Still had so much to do in life. But she lived life to the fullest.”
Evans’ own father died by suicide in 2018, an experience she wrote about in a letter for the mental illness awareness group Don’t Mind Me.
