Trudeau Congratulates Modi, Emphasizes Collaboration Amidst Tensions

In the aftermath of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third consecutive electoral triumph, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau extended his congratulations, expressing Canada’s eagerness to strengthen ties with India. Trudeau emphasized the significance of human rights, diversity, and the rule of law in anchoring their relationship.

Prime Minister Modi reciprocated by expressing India’s willingness to collaborate with Canada based on mutual understanding and respect for each other’s concerns. This exchange of messages comes amidst ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

Canada has accused alleged Indian agents of being involved in the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, a claim vehemently denied by India. India, in turn, has criticized Canada for allegedly harboring anti-India and Khalistani elements.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has recently criticized the Trudeau-led Canadian government for issuing visas to individuals with alleged ties to organized crime, accusing them of legitimizing extremism and separatism under the guise of free speech.

Despite these tensions, Prime Ministers Modi and Trudeau’s exchange of messages indicates a desire for collaboration and the advancement of bilateral relations between India and Canada.
