The arena has been awarded TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) Silver certification, a globally recognized standard for zero waste performance. This certification attests to UBS Arena’s unwavering dedication to minimizing its environmental impact by adopting sustainable waste management and reduction practices.
UBS Arena’s journey to zero waste began with a comprehensive shift in its waste operations. The arena eliminated single-use, landfill-bound items and introduced educational signage at each waste receptacle, guiding patrons to dispose of waste correctly. Additionally, UBS Arena created a QR code system that provides detailed information on waste streams throughout the venue. The arena has also invested in dedicated time, staff, and space to establish an on-site zero waste workroom to facilitate efficient sorting of materials.
In the pursuit of TRUE certification, UBS Arena collaborated with Delaware North and Winters Bros. as key partners. Through their combined efforts, the arena has maintained a diversion rate of over 95% from landfills. This accomplishment has resulted in the composting and recycling of over 1,550,000 lbs. of materials since the start of the program, equivalent to diverting over 4 million NHL regulation hockey pucks from landfills. Moreover, UBS Arena has avoided 300 metric tons of CO2 emissions and 14.2 metric tons of CO2 emissions through reuse and donation, respectively.
UBS Arena’s partnership with Collins Building Services (CBS) has been instrumental in achieving this TRUE Silver certification. CBS has deployed its Zero Waste team to work diligently behind the scenes at every event, ensuring that sustainability goals are met. Through their expertise and commitment, UBS Arena has been able to create a cleaner and healthier environment for both guests and the surrounding community.
