Daniel Salvatore, a 65-year-old father of three, was on his way to work as a carpenter when he was stabbed eight times outside the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan on Monday morning.
Salvatore was reading a book when he was ambushed by a stranger who plunged a knife into his neck and arm. Salvatore was knocked to the ground and tried to crawl away, but the attacker continued to stab him.
Salvatore finally broke free from the attacker and ran into a nearby Dunkin’ Donuts. Customers handed him napkins to try to stop the bleeding.
Cops quickly came to Salvatore’s aid and cuffed his attacker. Salvatore was taken to the hospital, where he received 46 stitches.
Salvatore is now recovering in the hospital and is thankful to be alive. He said he believes God was with him during the attack.
The attacker, identified by cops as Michael McCloskey, 42, has been charged with attempted murder. McCloskey is homeless and has a history of mental illness.
The attack has raised concerns about the safety of the Port Authority Bus Terminal and the need for more services for the mentally ill.
