The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall, in Maharashtra and parts of coastal Karnataka. The weather agency has attributed this to the advance of the Southwest Monsoon in the region. Senior Scientist at IMD, Dr. Soma Sen Roy, stated that heavy to very heavy rainfall has been observed over Maharashtra and parts of coastal Karnataka in the last 2-3 days due to the monsoon onset. He added that very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over southern and central Maharashtra, Marathwada, South Madhya Maharashtra, and Konkan, as well as coastal Karnataka and parts of North interior Karnataka. Madhya Maharashtra is expected to receive isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls on June 9th and 10th, and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on June 11th. The local forecast for Mumbai city and suburbs predicts generally cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 31°C and 24°C, respectively. The weather agency has also forecasted partly cloudy skies for Mumbai today with heat wave conditions at many places and strong surface winds. The maximum and minimum temperatures in the financial capital are expected to be around 43.4 and 28 degrees Celsius, respectively. The extended forecast for the next six days, until June 17th, predicts heatwave conditions. The Meteorological department has reported in a weather bulletin dated June 10th that conditions are favorable for the further advance of the Southwest Monsoon into more parts of the north Arabian Sea, South Gujarat, and Maharashtra during the next two days.
